CHICAGO – The following is a joint statement from Northeastern Illinois University Board of Trustees Chairman Jose Rico, Northeastern Illinois University President Gloria J. Gibson, and NEIU UPI President Nancy Matthews, Ph.D.
"After a productive bargaining session today, we are pleased to announce that the university has reached a tentative agreement with the faculty union at Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) - NEIU University Professionals of Illinois (NEIU, UPI IFT Local 4100). The union's members will vote on ratification of the tentative agreement in the coming days, after which further details will be available.
"This news represents the tireless work from all sides to avoid a strike so that students can continue to learn without disruption, and it’s a significant step toward healing our community.
"Throughout this process the newly assembled Board of Trustees centered its negotiations on feedback it sought from faculty, staff and students, with the understanding that we as a University community must treat each other with respect, compassion and understanding to repair harmful separation and misunderstanding.
"Similarly, the university’s faculty and staff union are pleased to have reached an agreement that they can recommend to its members, who are dedicated to working with NEIU students. This progress marks the start of what the faculty union hopes is a collaborative relationship with the Board of Trustees and the administration to make NEIU a welcoming, equitable, and inclusive learning institution that students, faculty and staff deserve.
"Between this tentative agreement and the Board of Trustees' recently released plans for a transparent and thorough process to choose an interim president, we believe the university is charting a new path to embrace its future."
We look forward to sharing updates with you as they become available.
