Legislative update - week of 6/5/15

The Illinois House of Representatives met in Springfield Thursday with a light agenda. Items included a House and Human Services Appropriations hearing regarding the Department of Human Services employing Beth Purvis as a Secretary of Education and the House approval of HB 1287, a version of a workers’ compensation bill.

Both the House and Senate will return to the Capitol next week Tuesday, June 9. The Senate has scheduled a Committee of the Whole meeting Tuesday to discuss the governor’s proposal to freeze property tax extensions. The House has not yet scheduled committees for next week.

The FY16 budget remains held by the parliamentary motion to reconsider. While it is unknown at this time what the next budget process steps will be, the Governor has announced cuts affecting families, the poor, and the elderly if a deal cannot be reached by the end of the current fiscal year (June 30). A budget will need to be in place by July 1 for services to continue and schools to open on time in August.
