Your fellow education employees need your help. Please email your lawmakers NOW!
During the veto session this week and next, our union is calling on Illinois lawmakers to pass House Bill 2778 (Senate Amendment #3), which would provide administrative leave for education employees and guarantee paycheck protection for non-instructional staff. It includes:
Paid time off for educators and staff at K-12 schools, public universities and community colleges when they or their children are forced to quarantine because of COVID illness or exposure. This time off would not impact an employees earned sick leave.
Paycheck protection for K-12 food service, custodial, transportation and other non-instructional employees who are unable to perform their jobs remotely when a school is closed or an e-learning day is triggered under COVID safety guidelines.
Email your lawmakers to demand that they provide these basic protections!
As the pandemic continues, many education employees are being forced to exhaust their sick leave and take unpaid time off when they or their children must isolate because of COVID. At the same time, non-instructional staff are too often losing pay when their school reverts to online learning.
These situations are unfair, yet many employers are unwilling to negotiate with our union to resolve these issues.
House Bill 2778 (Senate Amendment #3) would guarantee that all school districts treat education employees fairly and promote economic recovery while helping to ensure schools remain safe for those who learn and work in them.
