Illinois Federation of Teachers Hires New Director of Political Activities

Bryen Johnson brings "a wealth of knowledge and experience" to the IFT

SPRINGFIELD - Today, the Illinois Federation of Teachers (IFT) announced the hiring of veteran staffer Bryen Johnson as the union's statewide Director of Political Activities. Bryen replaces Michelle Paul, who left last month after 20 years at the IFT.

"We are so pleased to promote Bryen into the lead role as head of IFT's Political Activities department," said IFT President Dan Montgomery. "For more than a decade here with the IFT and nearly another decade before that, he has demonstrated a powerful commitment to improving the lives of workers and their families through the legislative process. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this critical role."

Johnson has served in multiple positions at the IFT since 2013. Most recently, he was the union's State Affiliate Political Organizer (SAPO), where he acted as a liaison to the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and helped to successfully coordinate and implement the IFT's political agenda on the state and national levels.

Prior to joining the IFT, Johnson served in various staff and managerial roles with the Illinois Senate Democrats.

“I’m honored to take on this new challenge at the IFT,” said Johnson. “And I’m excited to continue in my new role to build on the collaborative work we’ve done as a union centered around our membership.”

The Illinois Federation of Teachers (IFT) represents 103,000 teachers and paraprofessionals in PreK-12 school districts throughout Illinois, faculty and staff at Illinois’ community colleges and universities, public employees under every statewide elected constitutional officer, and retirees.
