    WHAT CLASSES ARE IN THE MVP SERIES?

    MVP I---Effective Classroom Management is the first in the series and includes proven practices from research. The sessions and case studies include:

    • Designing the physical environment of your classroom;
    • Establishing and teaching rules and routines to your students;
    • Creating a positive classroom climate; and
    • Dealing with student misbehavior and its consequences.

    The goal of the class is to introduce participants to the research base and theories of learning and development that underlie the teaching and learning process. Participants will study and apply those theories by reading theoretical texts, through large and small group discussions and by analyzing the experiences of practicing teachers presented in case studies.

    MVP II---Learning to Read is the second in the series and provides educators access to the latest research about effective practices for instructing beginning readers and applications for the classroom. The course includes information on providing a balanced, integrated approach to reading instruction and details the importance of providing early, systematic intervention for struggling readers. It is not designed solely for reading specialists. It applies an integrated curriculum approach, making it suitable for all educators responsible for helping students learn how to read and better understand written text.

    MVP III---Reading to Learn (reading comprehension for grades 4-12) is the third in the series. Instructor training will begin in the Spring of 2003.

    HOW DOES A LOCAL BEGIN AN MVP PROGRAM?

    Local presidents recommend members to become MVP Instructors. Both the local president and the potential instructor agree to support a program of teaching at least 50 individuals in their local or surrounding area. Following the training, the instructors return to their locals to organize a program and teach classes.
