In a union where every member often does heroic duty without giving it a second thought, there are nevertheless some very special heroes who have had a profound influence in or outside their workplace. The AFT honored them on the last morning of the AFT 2010 convention.
IFT would like to congratulate Lanise Sanders, a school nurse in the Chicago Public Schools and a member of the Chicago Teachers Union, who was selected as one of the honorees.
Sanders is a strong patient advocate who leapt into action to fight legislation introduced in Illinois to allow unlicensed personnel to administer medication to children in schools. This award is "about what can happen when we share the knowledge, stay focused and take action," said Sanders in accepting the award. "That epitomizes for me what a union is....people coming together for a common cause."

Tell us about someone who makes a difference As an IFT member, the union knows you make a difference every day for the students and citizens you serve in your workplace. But many IFT locals and members make a difference through volunteerism, too. We want to know about it! Tell us how you, a colleague or your IFT local serves the community through charitable efforts. Please send your stories, including contact information, to IFT Publications Director Amy Excell at aexcell@ift-aft.org. |
